Tues 9th June – The art of the online chair

About

Most Boards have now had a meeting or two online, and perhaps been pleasantly surprised at how smoothly they went. But even so, there are frustrations and niggles. One thing is clear – online meetings are not just the same as gathering round a table, but transplanted to Zoom. They have a different rhythm, new disciplines and different outcomes. The art of chairing online demands new techniques and skills, while participants have to develop new behaviours.

This interactive session is aimed at chairs, and others who chair committees, panels or other meetings. Governance during and after the pandemic has changed, perhaps permanently. New Board cultures and behaviours will emerge, and there is an opportunity to shape those positively. By working together, and sharing our experiences to date, we can Zoom into that future with confidence.

Friday 12 June – Managing staff online, on message and on target

About

Suddenly, in March 2020, the world changed overnight. Flexible working, largely home-based, became a reality for thousands of office workers, with five-year plans implemented in a week or two. As a crisis response, it all has worked about as well as it could. But with social distancing likely to be with us for some months at least, now we have to make it work longer term. Home-working was always going to be easier for those with spare rooms and gardens. Loneliness, anxiety and mental health issues have begun to take a toll. Performance issues, never easy to deal with, have become intractable in some cases. New starters may never have met their colleagues, making it harder to create that high-performance team buzz, and a positive organisational culture.

This interactive session is about the new techniques of managing teams at a distance, how to get the best out of colleagues, and how to discharge a duty of care to those who may be feeling the strain. It’s aimed at all those with management responsibilities, with a particular emphasis on how to create and maintain that positive culture in the unfamiliar new world of COVID-19 and beyond.

Fri 19 June – Delivering successful online training

About

When the world of work suddenly went online in March 2020, so too did the world of learning. Universities, schools and colleges put their lectures on Zoom or other systems. So too did employers for all the induction and training sessions they need to offer their staff – health and safety, using systems, diversity, customer care, and the whole range. So far so good. But in practice, it’s harder to attract and retain the attention of the audience, and there is strong evidence that the learning from online training is less likely to be retained longer term. How then to make online training a better experience, and make sure the learning is really embedded?

This session is about the new techniques and tricks of the trade needed for the new world. Good online training isn’t just about talking into a camera – it needs plenty of ‘receive’ alongside the ‘transmit’. The pace has to be carefully judged, with opportunities for interaction, sharing and follow-up learning carefully planned. This session is for all those who need to deliver training to colleagues, and will help them deliver the sessions that hit the spot for their participants, the organisation and their own confidence building.
