14 May: Housing Development Workshop (Rural Housing)

The Northern Housing Consortium, in partnership with Campbell Tickell, is running a series of housing development workshops focussing on various themes in relation to our member’s housebuilding ambitions, the challenges faced in delivering on those goals, and the wider context of the government’s housing and planning agenda.

The government has a goal to build 1.5 million homes by the end of this parliament. Within this, councils are being given new housebuilding targets under new planning rules aimed at building 370,000 homes a year.

This session will be looking at the specific challenges facing rural authorities. Members from rural authorities or who work alongside them are invited to discuss the issues and possibilities in house building in their local areas with changes to regulations.

Speakers confirmed for this session

  • John Burroughs – The North Yorkshire Council – John will be discussing the challenges and opportunities in rural housing from a local authority perspective. Some of the challenges include funding to support rural housebuilding, second homes and holiday lets, higher costs and other hurdles when it comes to land and providing housing for younger people to retain a working age population.
