Case Study

Board appraisals and skills matrix

Campbell Tickell were commissioned to provide support to the Chair and other appraisers in conducting the annual Board and Board member appraisals and skills audit.

The Brief

Having supported Wythenshaw Community Housing Group (WCHG) in its preparation for a regulatory In-Depth Assessment, which contributed to its G1/V1 grading, Campbell Tickell were commissioned to provide support to the Chair and other appraisers in conducting the annual Board and Board member appraisals and skills audit.

Steve provided a really effective and efficient support to the appraisers, enabling the meetings to be conducted smoothly and with a good atmosphere that enabled both appraiser and appraisee to have a rich conversation. The resulting report was succinct and relevant and has enabled the Board to move forward positively.

Our Approach

01

The organisation had an existing appraisal process and skills matrix and asked us to review both as part of the overall work. In addition to meeting with the Assistant Director of Compliance and Assurance to discuss the process and finalise the timetable, we met with the appraisers to agree an overall process for the individual meetings so we could provide relevant information for each appraisee, address individual styles in conducting appraisal meetings and ensure key themes would be addressed.

02

The new approach to appraisals was agreed and we provided support at each appraisal meeting to enable the appraiser to have a quality discussion with each appraisee and to ensure that all areas were covered. We contributed to conversations as appropriate. The individual issues, including any learning and development, were agreed with appraisees and forwarded to the Assistant Director of Compliance and Assurance to take forward.

02

The issues arising from the overall Board appraisal, priorities for the Chair and recommendations arising from the skills audit were included in a short report for the Board to consider.

Result

In addition to providing a revised, simple appraisal process and skills matrix, CT added value to the process by enabling each appraiser to have space for a quality conversation with each appraisee knowing that key elements of the discussion were captured including further learning and development. We also ensured that priorities for the Chair and the Board were agreed.

The organisation now has a simple and effective appraisal process that can be used in future years and adapted for years when external support is not required.
