Turning hopes into homes: a short history of affordable housing

This short history of affordable housing aims to set out the main legal and historical landmarks in the development of today's housing associations and the wider housing field. Other key historical facts are also included to give a frame reference.

After a short introductory chapter to set the context, a highlighted chronology describes the events that have shaped the housing world from the early records of 1235, through to the continuing changes of the 21st century.

Founded in 1935, the National Housing Federation now celebrates its 70th anniversary - a time to celebrate past achievements, but also an opportunity to look at the challenges and opportunities the future may bring. This book looks back at the history of the Federation and housing associations and highlights the key themes and issues that have come into play over the last seven decades and beyond.
