For residents - how we can support you

We believe in proactive support for you to build your skills, confidence and ability to get involved in scrutiny and holding your landlord to account. It takes real investment to build the relationship between residents, staff and Board members and reap the rewards of your involvement.

As the role of the regulator for housing concentrates on providers' finances, it will be for Boards, residents and staff to work in partnership to make sure that robust regulation of services takes place at a local level. There is a big ask of you.

A little bit of the right sort of challenge, however, can go a long way. This is not about 'playing the blame game' or 'finger pointing'. Effective challenge pushes people to explore new ways of thinking, to question assumptions and produce better decisions. Residents can challenge organisations to think about how the voices of residents are heard at all levels, how services can be tailored to meet needs and how to make sure services are consistent.

We know from experience that implementing co-regulation and scrutiny can be an anxious time, for staff as well as residents. Our role is to provide support, advice and guidance at a pivotal moment. Housing providers and their residents have a real opportunity to build something that will last - a local approach to improvement and accountability.
